St Mary of the Hills History
The Roman Catholic Parish of St. Mary of the Hills, founded in 1931, is an archdiocesan parish located just south of Boston in Milton, MA. The parish is a multi-ethnic, socially, culturally, and educationally diverse faith community.
In 1931 to accommodate and serve the increasing number of Catholics in the Milton area, a new parish was established at the directive of William Cardinal O’Connell, Archbishop of Boston. The name St. Mary of the Hills was suggested by the sister of the first pastor, Rev. Richard S. Millard, due to the proximity of the Blue Hills. The name was adopted by an early meeting of parishioners by a vote of 379-I, although it is not known who cast the lone dissenting vote.
The first Masses were celebrated in Blue Hills Hall until the parish completed and paid for a basement church by 1934. Through vigorous fundraising and the generosity of parishioners, the parish built the rectory in 1935 and dedicated the upper church in 1949. A 16-room school and convent were added in 1958. Now approaching 1,000 families and under the stewardship of its seventh pastor, Rev. Arthur F. Wright, St. Mary of the Hills continues to thrive and grow in both size and diversity.
