St. Paul's Anglican Church History

In September of 1859, a meeting was held and decision was made to found a parish, led by the Rev. J.P. Curran. The first Anglican Church was built on Victoria Street, on the property today occupied by the Lawn Bowling Club, with its first service on February 24, 1861.

The current St. Paul's Anglican Church, built in 1887, and consecrated on October 7, 1891, replaced the original church, after it was destroyed in the Great Fire of Southampton on November 4, 1886. The church, made of local yellow brick, is an eclectic combination of styles, with its architecture being copied from the collective memory of people emigrating from the British Isles. The rood screen, baptismal font, communion rail, some pews were rescued from the fire and re-installed in the current church.

The communion silver: two chalices, paten and ewer, were also saved from the fire and predate 1886. These are still used today on special occasions. The bell tower was erected in 1907. The bell is inscribed with the words 'Calling All to Worship'.

The parish hall was added in 1910.

The ascension window in the sanctuary at the front, and the windows at the back depicting Jesus and the children and Martha and Mary were donated in 1916. Other windows along the sides of the church date from 1955, and were created locally by Roland Aldous and James Meikle. These windows depict the most beloved saints of the church.

The Honour Rolls at the entrance to the church are in memory of the parishioners who fought in the First and Second World Wars.

The new totally accessible Community Hall, including Bevan Hall was opened in 2014.

The church and community hall are equipped with air conditioning, elevator, accessible washrooms, FM hearing assistance, audio/video system, and defibrillator. A new commercial kitchen was added in 2015.
