Who we are
Our
Church
Sometimes the church can be compared to “mixed nuts” or “allsorts”. In many respects this is true of we who are Surfers Paradise Anglican Church.
Where do we come from?
Although, in terms of the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane, our geographical boundary includes the suburbs of Surfers Paradise, the Isle of Capri, Bundall, Benowa, Florida Gardens, and Sorrento – regular members of our church come to meet together from as far south as Burleigh Heads and as far north as Brisbane.
What is the age profile?
The average age of congregation members would be around 60 years old. Having said that, we do have a good spread in the ages of regular members, from one year old to 92 years old. Whilst we have a small and very important number of youth, we have a growing number of children and their families.
Where do we fit theologically?
The Anglican Diocese of Brisbane has clergy and parishes who would identify themselves as liberal, catholic, evangelical and pretty much any other term that you can identify. Our previous two rectors (who were in the parish for 15 years between them) were both orthodox when it comes to the standard tenets of the Anglican Church and our current rector would describe himself as evangelical. Does this mean that every person in our church would define themselves in this way? No – but having had ministry from these three men for around 20 years, our teaching has helped us appreciate the uniqueness of Christ, the importance of the Bible and the call for repentance and trust in Jesus as Lord and Saviour.
Where do we fit liturgically?
Most weeks people attending church participate in a service of Holy Communion using the liturgies from An Australian Prayer Book or A Prayer Book for Australia. Our 7:15am service Sunday has some parts of the liturgy that are sung but our other services are quite relaxed in style. Clergy will normally robe for these services. On the first Sunday of the month we have a Prayer and Praise Service called “Kidzchurch”, which is focussed on children (and their families). It is run by a team of clergy and lay peo
2013 12 Christmas with Uptins 024ple and is quite informal.
What if you feel that you don’t fit into any of the categories listed above?
You are still welcome at our church. If you trust Jesus as your Lord and Saviour or you are interested in finding out more about what that means, then we would love to have you join us. One of the features that visitors often comment upon is the friendy and welcoming style of our church community. We do represent a very broad understanding of the Anglican Church and try to make space for everyone.
