Trinity United Methodist Church History

Our church was founded in 1844 in a borrowed building near the sawmill on what is now 404. The first building was erected in 1861 about 500 feet west of the present church, however, that church burned down in 1866, a new building on it's present site in 1867 it is still the building we currently are in. In 1952 electric was added to the building, and the old potbelly stoves were replaced with gas heaters. A Sunday school building was added in 1968. It had indoor plumbing and runing water. In 2003 we added a telephone and a mailbox. This church was built by the local people, and attended by the local people and we invite all our new and old neighbours to come and worship with us.

With each challenge we have encountered, we became stronger in our faith. We may provide links to other sites that provide more detail on our church history or particular events in our past.

From Old Country Church of Sussex County Delaware. published 1977

A stark and stunning country church is Trinity United Methodist Church near Dublin Hill. Built on the highest part of Sussex County, the church was named after Trinity in Philadelphia Pa. Trinity in Sussex had its beginnings as far back as 1777 durning the ministy of Bishop Asbury. Then Charles Twyford, a minister, became a leading force in the church. After his death, the members who met in private homes became almost inactive.

However in 1843, the members reestablished themselves enough to build a church. As was the fate of many buildings, it was destroyed by fire, but was immediately rebuilt. This was in 1865. The first trustees were elected in 1861.

As was the case with many country churches, they were built through the cooperation of people from other churches and denominations. This continued with Trinity church even when the new wing was built in 1967. a local farmer, "Author Beachamp," who knew carpentry became the "head carpenter" free of charge. The addition which serves as the church's Sunday School was dedicated in 1968, about a year and a half after the groundbreaking ceremonies.

The church which is on the same circuit with Cokesbury and Cannon. has over 70 members and an active Sunday School.

We invite you to become a part of the church today, and a piece of its history tomorrow.
