Wardsville United Church History
Wardsville Pastoral Charge was formed in 1925 and originally included Wardsville and Cashmere. In 1938, Wardsville Pastoral Charge amalgamated with Newbury Pastoral Charge, which included Newbury and Cairo. In 2005, Knox United Church in Newbury closed, leaving it as a two-point pastoral charge. In November 2009, the relationship between Wardville and St. Andrew's was dissolved, leaving Wardsville Pastoral Charge as a one-point charge.
•Wardsville United Church, located at 207 Church Street, was established in 1925, formerly Methodist and Presbyterian. Wardsville Methodist Circuit was formed in 1874, formerly Wesleyan; it subsequently joined the Methodist Church, Canada in 1884, and included Wardsville, Newbury, Moraviantown, Bothwell, Wesley and Armstrong's Churches in Euphemia Township, Cashmere. The church building was constructed in 1873. Wardsville Presbyterian Church was established ca. 1852. The Methodists and Presbyterian both joined the United Church of Canada in 1925 and formed Wardsville United Church. It is still an active congregation of the United Church.
•Knox United Church in Newbury was established in 1925, formerly Presbyterian. Presbyterians may have had services in Newbury as early as the 1850s. In 1871, Newbury became a mission station along with Wardsville. A church was constructed on Railway Street in 1874 and a new building was opened in November 1908. It joined the United Church of Canada in 1925 and formed a two-point pastoral charge with Cairo until it joined Wardsville Pastoral Charge in 1938. It closed April 5, 2005.
