Warsaw Trinity United Methodist Church History
Trinity United Methodist Church was founded in 1882 as a church in the United Brethren in Christ denomination. In 1945 it merged with Evangelical Church to become and Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) congregation and in 1968 with the Methodist Church to become a United Methodist congregation.
The church was organized under the direction of Daniel Deeds of Warsaw. Its first meeting took place August 19, 1882 in the upstairs room of a building on South Buffalo Street. The church met there for about a year; there were 11 charter members.
In May 1883, a one-room frame church building that had previously been used by the Presbyterians was purchased and used as the UB church's meeting house. It was located at the corner of Market and Pine streets. That church building, heated by two wood-burning stoves, was dedicated August 5, 1883 with its first pastor being Rev. A. Cummins.
In 1894, construction of a building to replace the one-room church was started. Located at the northeast corner of Center and Washington streets, it was dedicated February 17, 1895. Over the years the building was enlarged to include such things as a kitchen and rooms for Sunday School. In 1909 a house on North Lake Street was acquired as a parsonage; a house on East Market Street was later used for that purpose. In 1940 a pipe organ was installed in the church; it had previously been used in a local theater.
Because the church had outgrown its building at Center and Washington, the congregation decided to construct a new church. Ground breaking for the new limestone building located at 832 E. Center Street was held July 13, 1954. The church was dedicated November 21, 1954. That building is still being used by the church today.
