Who we are
Here at Wheelersburg United Methodist Church we have a mission.
According to Matthew’s Gospel, the risen Christ made it clear: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you” (Matt. 28:19-20). Based on this “Great Commission,” Wheelersburg United Methodist Church (WUMC) has stated its purpose: Make followers of Jesus Christ to change the world.
We fulfill this purpose in four ways:
We reach out to people and welcome them into the church.
Our mission is to reach out to people, listen to them, accept them, share the gospel in word and deed, invite them into the family of faith, and joyfully receive all who will respond.
Isaiah 49:6, Matthew 5:14-16, Matthew 25:40, Romans 15:7
We relate people to God and help them deepen their relationship with God.
Through worship, Baptism, Holy Communion, Bible study, prayer, and other means of grace, we are strengthened for ministry.
Eccl. 4:9-12, Hebrews 10:24-25, Acts 2:42
We resource people to live Christian lives.
We come to church not only for our own personal enrichment but also to prepare ourselves to do the work of love and to get ready to be Christ’s disciples in the community.
Proverbs 27:17, Ephesians 4:7-16, 2 Timothy 2:1-2, Titus 2:1-8
We release followers for service into the world.
The church exists not to serve itself but to serve the world.
Mark 10:43-45, John 13:15-17, Acts 20:35, 2 Corinthians 5:20

Wheelersburg United Methodist Church History
Our History
1822
The Wheelersburg Methodist Episcopal Church is organized. Since there was no church building, meetings were held at the homes of the charter members.
1838
The first church building was erected near the location of the current post office. It was described as, “a square building lacking any adornment, hot in the summer and cold in the winter.”
1883
A new church was built on the site of the existing church at the corner of Gallia and Dewey Streets. This building served the needs of the community until a larger church was needed.
1917
Merger between the Zion Methodist’s (German Methodists whose church was located on Lang Slocum Rd.) and The Wheelersburg Methodist Episcopal Church.
1926
Existing church building constructed. This was written about the church, “our church is a very fine impressive looking dark red brick building, with a beautiful painted window, showing Christ knocking at the door, with such very realistic colors.”
1939
The Methodist Episcopal Church reunited with two breakaway Methodist denominations (the Methodist Protestant Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.) From this union we became the Wheelersburg Methodist Church.
1966
Educational Building added onto the existing church. This addition was necessary to accommodate the needs of the growing community.
1968
Merger of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church. Thus, we became the Wheelersburg United Methodist Church.
