Yea Presbyterian Church History
The present Yea Presbyterian Church was opened on 12/7/1923, and is in the Presbytery of North East Victoria. The early Scottish settlers met in the home of 'Mrs Grace McLeish and the blacksmith's shop of John Borrie for gospel readings, hymns and probably an occasional service conducted by a passing preacher. Later services were held in the brick church built by Mrs Alexander Miller' [this building was believed to have been erected as a Baptist Church, but not used as such, and gifted to?/purchased by the Presbyterians?1. A formal congregation was formed in 1863, and their first minister, the Rev A Murdock inducted on 16/3/1864. The Rev D Milne was inducted in 1885, after several years without a minister. During his tenure (1885-1905) he created a Session, and major renovations were carried out to the church building. Subsequently some seating and the pulpit requirements were transferred to the new church building. The first minister in the new church building was the Rev H A E O'Sullivan, who was appointed about 1921. The Anglican and Presbyterian Churches had established a school about 1859, and the church building had for a period been used by the school.
